Paul Berger

Paul Berger is interested in reviewing all types of fine art photography. Preferably no commercial work.

Paul Berger has been working in the photographic medium since 1965, and in digital electronic media since 1981. He received a BA in Art/Photography at UCLA in 1970 and an MFA in Photography at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester , New York , in 1973. He is currently Professor of Art in photography at the University of Washington 's School of Art , where he has taught since1978. Berger's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since the mid 1970's.

Walter Bodle

Tyler Boley became active in fine art photography in the eighties, studying with Ruth Bernhard, Marsha Burns, Michael Burns, Linda Conner, Frank Gohlke, John Sexton, Jerry Uelsmann, and Brett Weston, and others After experimenting with the first quad tone inkset made for the Epson 3000, then succeeding materials and software approaches, he evolved into an acknowledged digital fine art printing expert and is now part owner of Custom Digital LLC. Tyler Boley Photography has produced national award winning work for over ten years, appearing frequently in the Mead Show, the Black Book AR100, and other publications.

Christine Burgoyne

Christine is interested in reviewing both color and BW, along with any new processes. Innovations in thought and design—especially where the photographer becomes the choreographer of the event/image. Conceptual work. She enjoys working with those who are new in the photographic field – to discuss projects, bodies of work, marketing.

Christine Burgoyne is an artist using photography as her medium with a minor in fine arts and design. She studied with Ruth Bernhard, Judy Dater, Kurt Fishback, Frank Dituri, and Cherie Heiser. She is Curator of No Boundaries art exhibition for artists with disabilities and past president Photography Council – Seattle Art Museum .

Marsha Burns

Marsha Burns has been photographing for more than half of her life. Burns has had three NEA Grants and many grants from Polaroid Corporation. She has worked in 4X5, 20X24 Polaroid black & white and color, which she has learned to print herself. She has never signed a print she didn't make, nor does she intend to.

Heather Dwyer

Heather Dwyer is interested in reviewing all types of work. Heather's own passion is street photography.

Dwyer has been working for 15 years in arts administration for not-for-profit, private and government agencies in the Northwest. She currently works for 4Culture and her previous arts experience includes serving as President of Washington Lawyers for the Arts; Arts Manager, Jack Straw Productions; Program Director, Artist Trust; Assistant Director, Bank of America Art Programs Northwest Region; and Public Art Program Assistant, Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs. Dwyer has a B.F.A. from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle , Washington and a M.F.A. from California Institute of Arts (CalArts) in Valencia , California .

Nancy Edelstein

Nancy is interested in reviewing all types of photography. 

After earning a BFA in photography from the University of Michigan majoring in photography, Nancy Edelstein worked as an art director primarily in the fashion industry for many years. Her design work has received numerous honors including gold and silver awards at the New York Art Directors Club and has been on the cover of several magazines. She has been an avid collector of contemporary fine art photography for over 25 years. For the past six years she has been devoted to her true passion creating photographs. Since that time her work has been exhibited in several juried shows, the latest receiving an honorable mention in the Photo Center NW 9 th Annual Photo Competition.

Carla Fraga

Carla Fraga is most interested in reviewing conceptual, minimal, digital, experimental, new pictorialist and mixed media types of work.

A photography educator for over ten years in analog and digital media, Carla's work centers on expressing ideas through color photography. For eight years she assisted and curated over sixty photography exhibits at the FotoCircle gallery in Seattle .

Davis Freeman

His work is part of several permanent collections including the Museum of Glass Tacoma , WSU permanent collection, City of Seattle , Ralph Lauren, and Graham Nash. He has taught local, regional, and national workshops on portraits, the business of photography and creativity.

Claire Garoutte

Claire is interested in reviewing all types of photography. One of her many strengths are documentary projects.

Willamette University , BA 1984; University of Washington , MFA 1990. Claire Garoutte's photography has been exhibited internationally. Her work has appeared in anthologies published by Cassell Press and Midmarch Press as well as in Art in America . She was the principal photographer for glass artist Dale Chihuly from 1991-1996. Claire Garoutte wrote and illustrated the book Matter of Trust that was published in Germany in 1996. Since 1994, she has worked extensively in Cuba researching her second book. She has taught at PCNW since 1988.

Dr. Rosalyn Gerstein

Roz is interested in reviewing whatever comes her way, but is particularly suited to review black and white photography, social documentary, and portraiture.

Roz Gerstein studied photography with Harry Callahan both as an undergraduate and graduate student at Rhode Island School of Design (BFA '69 & MA '70). She received her doctorate in 1986 in “Communication, Technology and Culture” from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she was awarded a research fellowship to develop interactive documentaries at the MIT Media Lab. In addition to exhibiting and publishing photography, Dr. Gerstein has worked as an art director, publisher and an educator during her 35-year career. Originally from the East Coast, she now resides in Kirkland where she continues to create fine art photographs and figurative paintings.

Ms. Gibson is most interested in reviewing contemporary and mixed media photography, but would also like to see work done with 19th century processes such as cyanotype, tintype, etc. However, she does not wish to see traditional (i.e. landscape) or documentary work.

Gail Gibson is the co-owner of Gail Gibson Gallery in Seattle , WA and has been in business for 14 years. Ms. Gibson is also a member of the Seattle Art Dealers Association and the Association of International Photography Dealers that is based in New York . The gallery primarily shows established early 20th century artists, contemporary photography, and mixed media works.

Professionally involved in photography since 1969, Howard Giske's experience in freelance photojournalism, writing, large format commercial studio work, and all aspects of museum photography has led him to his current position as Curator of Photography at Seattle 's Museum of History and Industry. His work had appeared in publications ranging from The Seattle Times to Rolling Stone . His love of, and respect for documentary work qualifies him as a reviewer of this uniquely challenging type of photography.

Corianton Hale is most interested in reviewing fine art photography, but also editorial/news and portraiture.

Corianton Hale is a self-taught graphic designer whose creative energy is focused on music packaging and editorial design. Learning through zines and flyers, he has worked his way towards national recognition with numerous CD designs, identity packages and a recent fashion campaign, which included window installations in New York , LA , France and Portugal . He also plays guitar and tours with the band Tullycraft, and is obsessed with the Brazillian film “City of God ”. He is currently enjoying his position as Art Director at The Stranger.

Gary Halpern

Gary has broad-based experience in all genres, but is most experienced with photojournalism, travel, nature (landscape and wildlife) and sports photography. Commercial photography and fine art photography are also subjects that he's very familiar with.

Gary Halpern is the publisher of Seattle-based Photo Media magazine (www.photomediagroup.com), now in its sixteenth year of publication. In the last four years, Photo Media has been recognized for publishing excellence with two Maggie Awards in seven nominations, and two Apex Grand Awards in six nominations. He is also the producer of World in Focus (www.worldinfocus.com), an event consisting of a photo contest, photo exhibition and seminar series designed to raise environmental and cultural awareness through photography, held in June, 2003 in Seattle . He was also the director and producer of Photo Media Expo, a 3-day photo trade show and seminar series from 1993-96 in Seattle . Mr. Halpern is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute (BFA in Photography, 1975) and had a career as a professional photographer preceeding his segue into publishing and event production.

As an invited reviewer and speaker, she has attended over a dozen photo festivals in the USA , Latin America and Europe .

David Johnson

His fine art photographs are exhibited in national and international juried exhibitions. He has been President of the Seattle Art Museum Photography Council. He has taught at PCNW since 1990 and teaches at UW Extension and at Pierce College .

David Julian

David Julian is interested in reviewing all types of work. However, David has less interest in reviewing work made in the style of Stephen Shore , Jeff Wall and Bill Eggelston.

Julian is drawn to work that conveys concept, truth and emotion. He believes strongly in originality, vision and craftsmanship. His background is as an art director, photographer and assemblage artist. He has always loved those on the edge or surrealism, the decisive moment, and loves vintage anonymous images as well. In Julian's opinion, an artist's work must communicate something about the artist and his/her relationship to the subject and work. Art should be memorable unto itself, without the necessity for a heady artist's statement to explain the work to the viewer.

Nancy LeVine

Nancy is interested in reviewing people photography of all kinds.

Nancy LeVine is an award winning photographer who travels worldwide on a variety of assignments. Previously, she was based in New York City for 15 years where her assignments were focused on fashion and personalities. She also frequently traveled to and photographed in Paris . Nancy has a book published called ‘A Dog's Book of Truths' , which is in its fourth printing.

Spike Mafford

Spike is interested in reviewing any work created by shooting film as an original media. 

Spike Mafford comes from an art oriented family. Both parents are professional artists. He ran an alternative gallery for 10 years in Seattle called Galleria Potatoehead. He has run his own photo studio for 15 years and has been showing his fine art work for over 20 years. Spike's work has been widely published and included in many personal and corporate collections. Currently he is working on a new series of photographs for the blind.

Laura Matzer

Laura Matzer is currently the Art Collection Program Manager for the Microsoft Art Collection and previously worked at the Amon Carter Museum , when she wrote an article on photography for Art Education, The Journal of the National Art Education Association , (September 2003), and a self-guided visitor brochure, Focus on Photography: A Guide to Processes . Most recently she judged BaseCamp The City of Enumclaw's twelfth Annual Juried Art Exhibit. Laura holds an MA from the University of Texas at Austin in Museum Education.

Marianne McCoy's art background started when she was a little girl in Spokane , WA . She loved to draw as a child and has continued drawing most of her life. Design was her major at Cornish College of the Arts. She quickly learned after taking Photography 101 that the medium would be her passion and extension of creativity. She studied at the Photographic Center Northwest as well as teaching photography there for three years. Her studio is located in Kirkland , WA .

Lyn McCracken

Lyn is interested in reviewing all types of work.

Lyn has been teaching photography to teenagers and adults for the past twelve years. She received several grants and awards for her work with teenagers in the Bay Area (1994-1997). Her photographic work has been exhibited primarily on the West Coast in galleries, museums, and public art forums. She recently completed a series of work collected by Seattle City Light Portable Works and for two years (2002-2004) exhibited large scale murals (100 feet by 14 feet) sponsored by 1% for the Arts ( Seattle ). Lyn currently teaches photography at The Northwest School.

Ann Pallesen was born in Wheat Ridge, Colorado . She received her BFA in photography from Colorado State University in 1993. Pallesen has been the Gallery Director of the Photographic Center Northwest since 1996. The Photographic Center Northwest gallery exhibits the work of emerging, mid-career & internationally known artists working in the photographic medium. She has curated and installed over 100 photographic exhibitions. She has scheduled photographers such as Keith Carter, Graciela Iturbide, Elliott Erwitt, & Arthur Fellig (Weegee) to exhibit or lecture in Seattle . Pallesen has been included in panel discussions, portfolio review events, and has served as juror for several outside exhibitions. Pallesen is a fine art photographer and has exhibited her work in solo and group shows in Seattle at Benham Gallery, Frye Art Museum , Bumbershoot Arts Festival, Photographic Center Northwest and Colorado State University .

Kirsten Rian has served as Executive Director of Blue Sky Gallery for 13 years, and is a Board member of Photo Lucida (formerly Photo Americas). She has served on grant panels for the Regional Arts and Culture Council, and is a free-lance grants writer and consultant for regional arts non profits in all disciplines. Rian has a degree in painting and is an abstract painter, as well as published poet.

Paul Sundberg

Paul is interested in looking at all types of fine art photography.

Paul Sundberg brings a unique perspective and extensive experience in Street Photography, which he has taught previously at PCNW. Sundberg is also a conceptual artist. For example, in 1997, he collaborated with Josh Greene on an installation The Living Room. They placed an open living room in downtown Seattle for a month and documented passerby's interaction with the room. He has exhibited his work at the PCNW Gallery and FotoCircle Gallery.

Scott Wallin

For the museum Scott is interested in reviewing fine art photographs, especially work that would challenge an increasingly sophisticated audience (we market to Oregon , Washington , Idaho and British Columbia ). His personal tastes include male nudes, transportation, especially automobiles and urban scenes.

It is Wallin's professional mission to promote contemporary Pacific Northwest photography. Being in that position to curate and design in a museum setting, he has opportunities to develop challenging photography exhibitions and educational programs for the very diverse community of visitors that they attract. Whenever possible, it most interests Wallin to show work that may be unexpected and challenging for their audience. Tom is most interested in reviewing work that is most appropriate for stock as opposed to purely fine art. Business, Lifestyle, corporate, and some nature, travel, and possibly fashion would fit. Some more artistic material can also apply for stock, depending upon subject matter and approach.

Tom Wear serves as Art Director and Senior Editor for Getty Images, the world's leading imagery provider. Working with a diverse group of contributing photographers from around the world, Tom is responsible for communicating the needs of the collection and ensuring photographers are creating the most compelling images for customers, both in content and style. In addition, Tom is responsible for reviewing submissions from contributing photographers and editing their portfolio for inclusion in Getty Images' collections. Tom began his career in the stock imagery business in 1985 as a researcher at Comstock. In 1995, he left Comstock as Senior Editor and Photographer Relations Coordinator to become Senior Editor at Corbis Corp. in Bellevue , WA . He joined Getty Images in 1999 and is currently the President of the West Coast chapter of the American Society of Picture Professionals.

Adam Weintraub

Adam is interested in reviewing any and all work that might be project oriented, story-driven and thematic. Also, anything that might be looking for outlets or ideas, concepts or vision.

Adam L. Weintraub's current projects include the Co-Presidency of Blue Earth Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to educating the public about endangered environments, threatened cultures and other social concerns. He is teaming up with the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle to help establish a photo program and artist retreat at his home in Cusco , Peru . He is also involved in an archiving, conservation and cataloguing endeavor for famed Peruvian photographer Martin Chambi whose work has been shown at MOMA and around the world and whose archives are currently in disrepair.

Winifred Westergard

Winifred Westergard graduated from Seattle Central Community College's commercial photography program in 1994 and has been freelancing in Seattle since…shooting mostly portrait, event, and wedding photography. She has been working with students at the Cornish Photography Department for 6 years.
